Bowl Scenarios – If You Didn’t Already Know

December 1, 2011
By

In case you haven’t already heard the bowl scenarios for WVU, let’s go over them one more time.

WVU, Cincinnati and Louisville are the three remaining teams that are able to grab the Big East’s BCS bid.  Everybody needs help from someone else.  It seems only fitting for the season this conference has had.

The Scenarios – Simple

Louisville (7-5, 5-2) is done playing.  They need a loss from Cincinnati against UCONN on Saturday at noon.

Cincinnati (8-3, 4-2) needs a win against UCONN on Saturday and will most likely need a loss from WVU.  They can still have the highest BCS ranking if both WVU and Cincy win, but it is very unlikely they will.

WVU (8-3, 4-2) needs a win tonight against USF and for Cincinnati to beat UCONN.  This will create a 3-way tie for the BCS Bowl bid and will almost ensure WVU gets the tiebreaker.

WVU is currently ranked 23rd in the BCS Standings.  Cincinnati is seven spots below them at 30th.  A win over USF for WVU is as equally impressive as a win for Cincinnati over UCONN.  Or just as least impressive, depending on how you look at it.

Why is this important? If WVU and Cincinnati win, WVU will have the higher BCS ranking and be heading to a BCS Bowl, most likely the Orange Bowl.  Why? Because neither win will be enough to propel one in front of the other and that is what people want to see.  The voters know that WVU is the only team that can compete against someone in a BCS Bowl and they know that WVU is the only team that brings a strong passionate fan base.  They also know that West Virginia is more of an appealing match-up in the BCS and will draw more viewers.

Once again.  A West Virginia win tonight and a Cincinnati win on Saturday. After that, start looking at your travel and hotel plans.
